Custer National Forest and Gallatin National Forest meet at a high-elevation divide along the border of Sweet Grass and Stillwater counties. This alpine environment is defined by the Lake Plateau, a concentration of glacial water bodies including Lake Diaphanous, Lake Pinchot, and Wounded Man Lake. The terrain is marked by significant peaks such as Tumble Mtn, Chalice Peak, and the Two Sisters, while drainage systems like Rabbit Gulch and Flood Cr flow through the deep valleys between them. The map illustrates a landscape shaped by ice and water, where named features such as Lake Vengeance and Lake Surrender provide distinct landmarks for navigation in the backcountry. This 2017 survey serves as a detailed record of the wilderness hydrology and topography within the Beartooth Mountains region.
