Twitchell Dam and its adjacent Twitchell Reservoir dominate the northern terrain of this central coast landscape, regulating the seasonal flows of the Cuyama River. This 2015 survey illustrates the sharp transition from the steep, ridged topography of the Sierra Madre Mountains and Los Coches Mtn in the east to the broad alluvial plains of the Santa Maria Valley. The confluence of the Cuyama and Sisquoc River systems provides the hydrological foundation for the region's agricultural layout.
