The Potato River and its numerous tributaries dominate this mid-century survey of the Iron County landscape. The community of Upson sits at the northern edge, situated where the Minneapolis St Paul and Sault Ste Marie railroad tracks cross the river. Further west along the line, the small settlement of Rouse marks another point of human activity within the dense network of wetlands and creeks.

Logging history is evident through the presence of McIver Camp and several segments of Old Railroad Grade that snake through the townships of Anderson and Knight. These remnants of timber extraction, alongside features like Shirley Lake and O'Brien Lake, provide a detailed look at the infrastructure of the Northwoods before many of these industrial paths were reclaimed by the forest. The confluence of the Forks Tyler Creek and the Tyler Forks River further illustrates the complex drainage system of this glaciated terrain.
