Lake Koocanusa dominates the eastern edge of this Lincoln County landscape, a reservoir formed by the damming of the Kootenai River. The terrain rises sharply to the west toward the summits of Lawrence Mtn and Ziegler Mountain, which define the local drainage patterns. Numerous waterways including Ural Creek, Barron Creek, and Bristow Creek flow from these heights toward the lake, cutting through the forest. The area is largely managed for wilderness and recreation, evidenced by the Barren Creek Boat Ramp and a network of Forest Service roads. Transportation through this backcountry is primarily via gravel and dirt routes such as Bristow Creek Rd, following the natural contours of the mountain valleys. The map illustrates the contemporary state of this mountain-and-water geography, where the original river valley has been transformed into a large-scale aquatic recreation area.
