Vanderwagen and the surrounding high desert of the Eastern Navajo Agency are defined by a network of seasonal drainages and isolated outposts in this early 21st-century record. The landscape is carved by the deep Manuelito Canyon and the branching systems of Whitewater Arroyo, Dubois Wash, and Skeets Wash. These ephemeral watercourses dictated the placement of small ranching and residential clusters, including Rico Ranch and Olson.
