Little Butte Cem serves as a small but significant marker of local heritage on this prairie landscape in Burke County. The area is defined by a series of drainage features, or coulees, including Ankenbauer Coulee in the north and the winding Niobe Coulee through the center. These landforms cut through the glacial terrain, which is punctuated by prominent rises such as Little Butte and Ward Hill. A network of section-line roads, such as 91st ST NW and Co RD 16, organizes the open country. To the south, the terrain softens into a cluster of wetlands and water bodies, most notably Martin Lakes, Eckert Lake, and Jensen Lake, reflecting the characteristic prairie pothole geology of the region.
