Black River meanders through the flat drainage basins of Northwest Minnesota, defining the hydrologic character of this landscape at the border of Pennington Co and Polk Co. The 2016 survey illustrates a terrain dominated by a precise section-line grid, where long stretches of road like 160th St NW and 170th Ave SW segment the agricultural fields. A significant corridor is traced by the Pembina Trl NW and Pembina Trl, following the historical path of the Red River trails used by oxcarts in the mid-19th century. Wetland areas remain a prominent feature, most notably the expansive Goose Lake Swamp and the waters of Goose Lake. Near the southern boundary, the Black River Cem stands as a quiet marker of the local community's heritage in this rural prairie region.
