The high desert landscape of Socorro and Lincoln County is defined by extensive water management infrastructure and military activity during the early 1980s. A significant portion of the western territory is occupied by the White Sands Missile Range, including the Red Canyon Range Camp. The importance of water in this arid environment is reflected in the numerous named tanks and wells scattered across the terrain, such as Rentfro Well, Pop Jackson Tank, and Juan Farmer Tank, which served the local ranching economy.
