Walker Butte rises as a central landmark in this high-desert landscape situated along the boundary of Deschutes Co and Lake Co. The terrain is defined by volcanic features, from the East Lava Field in the south to a string of prominent cinder cones including North Butte, South Butte, and Kilgore Butte. Water management in this arid environment is evident through a network of isolated improvements such as Jaynes Well, Rogers Well, and the North Butte Water Hole, which served the needs of ranchers and travelers moving across Squaw Flat.
