Kittatinny Mountain dominates this landscape, forming a massive diagonal spine that separates the Delaware valley from the interior glaciated basins of northern New Jersey. Surveyed in the late 1880s, the map reveals a river-driven economy before modern bridges replaced traditional water crossings. Prominent river access points like Dingmans Ferry, Smiths Ferry, and Deckers Ferry provided essential links between Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Along the eastern slopes, the New York Susquehanna and Western RR skirts the edge of Newton, passing through Emmons Station. Small agricultural hamlets and post offices such as Peters Valley Bevans P.O. and Wallpack Center are scattered throughout the valleys of Big Flat Brook and Paulins Kill.
