The winding course of Belt Creek carves a deep valley through the high plains along the border of Chouteau and Cascade counties. This landscape is defined by its dramatic relief, where the water has cut intricate systems of coulees into the plateau, including Widow Coulee, Hower Coulee, and Tueverson Coulee. The engineering required to navigate this terrain is evident in the series of rail tunnels following the creek bed, such as Lacey Tunnel Number 3 and the Amphitheater Tunnel Number 4, which allow passage through the sharp bends of the canyon walls.
