Tuckaleechee Cove and the town of Townsend serve as the western gateway to the high ridgelines of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This terrain is defined by its deep hollows and family-named cemeteries, including Hatcher Cem, Mattox Cem, and the Sallie Moore Cem near Greenbrier. The landscape transitions from the agricultural valley floors of Wear Valley to the dramatic heights of Fodderstack Mountain and Meigs Mountain.

Tracing the path of the Little River, the map highlights complex natural features like The Sinks and numerous small drainages such as Indian Camp Br and Strickler Br. Local history is preserved in the location of the Park Settlement and the many gaps and leads that provided passage through the mountains, from Spicy Gap to Buckhorn Gap. This survey documents the intersection of protected wilderness and the long-established mountain communities that line the park boundaries.
