Theon Cemetery and the nearby settlement of Theon anchor this study of the rural highlands in Asotin County. The landscape is defined by the sharp transition between the elevated Weissenfels Ridge and the deep drainage basins of Tenmile Creek and Couse Creek. A network of unpaved and secondary roads, such as Dwight Halsey Rd and Mill Creek Rd, connects isolated outposts like the Ausman Ranch and Craige to the larger regional watershed. This 2011 survey by the U.S. Geological Survey illustrates a sparsely populated agricultural and ranching district where topographical features like Montgomery Gulch and Hoskins Gulch dictate the paths of local transit and settlement. The reliance on creek-side development is evident along Mill Creek, which cuts a significant path through the central portion of the quadrangle.
