The Roanoke River dominates this portion of the coastal plain, carving a wide path between the settlements of Weldon and Garysburg. This 2013 survey illustrates the modern street grids of these historical rail and river towns, including South Weldon and residential corridors like Caroline Ave and Washington Ave. The complex hydrology of the river basin is evident in the winding secondary channels like Mush Island Gut, which encircles the large landmass of Mush Island. To the northeast, the landscape transitions into low-lying wetlands such as Gumberry Swamp and the drainage of Occoneechee Cr. The road network, from rural routes like Gin Loop Rd to major thoroughfares, connects these riverside communities to the surrounding agricultural timberlands and smaller water bodies like Pearces Pond and Trouble Field Cr.
