Stephens State Forest dominates the northwestern reaches of this Iowa landscape, where the deeply dissected terrain of the Lucas and Monroe County line meets the headwaters of several drainages. The small community of Weller is centered near St Marys Ch, while the surrounding countryside is marked by a high density of rural burial grounds, including Stoneking Cem, Smithfield Cem, and Manley Cem.

Transport and industry leave a visible footprint here, specifically with an Old Railroad Grade cutting through the center of the map toward the Bucknell Ruins. Further evidence of early 1980s land use is found in the northeast corner near Consol, where a Strip Mine operates at the edge of the survey area.
