Wheeler and Dieterich anchor this portion of the Illinois prairie, situated along the border of Effingham and Jasper counties. The landscape is defined by the winding course of Big Muddy Creek and its many tributaries, including Dieterich Creek, Sandy Creek, and Turkey Creek, which carve gentle drainage patterns through the agricultural grid. These waterways dictated the placement of early infrastructure, seen in the winding path of the Public Hwy as it follows the creek valley through the center of the township.
