About this map

Whitewater Creek meanders through the high plains of northern Montana, defining the drainage patterns of this sparsely populated ranching landscape. In the mid-1980s, the small settlement of Whitewater served as the primary hub for the surrounding Phillips County homesteads, situated near the southeastern edge of the quadrangle. The terrain is characterized by a series of erosion-carved coulees and seasonal water sources, such as Dibble Creek and the curiously named Lone Tree Coulee. Life in this region relied heavily on these scattered water points, including Dibble Spring, which provided essential resources for livestock in a territory where the topography transitions between broad plateaus and subtle, rolling depressions. The map illustrates a section of the American West where the grid of sections and townships overlays a landscape shaped by glacial drift and wind.
