The N Fork Smoky Hill River meanders through the heart of this High Plains landscape on the border of Sherman and Wallace counties. This western Kansas terrain is defined by its drainage patterns, most notably the namesake Wild Horse Draw and Gardner Draw, which cut through the open country. The presence of the Bellamy Farm Airport near the southern boundary reflects the region's reliance on private aviation for agricultural and ranching operations. Steep relief is found along Kolacny Canyon, providing a sharp contrast to the surrounding tablelands. A network of section-line roads, including Emerald Elm Rd and Co RD 19, provides the primary infrastructure for the sparsely populated homesteads and farmsteads that characterize this portion of the Kansas interior.
