The eastern slopes of the Toquima Range meet the broad expanse of Big Smoky Valley in this central Nevada landscape. The terrain is defined by a series of deep drainage networks, most notably Wildcat Canyon and the West Northumberland Canyon, which cut through the high country protected within the Toyabe National Forest. This modern mapping captures a high-elevation environment where water sources like Iron Spring and Jeans Spring were essential landmarks for early cattlemen and miners moving through the Great Basin.
