Wiley Mesa and Techado Mesa dominate this high-desert landscape at the intersection of Cibola, Socorro, and Catron Counties. The area is characterized by a series of prominent mesas and deep drainages, including the dramatic Cañon de la Mosca and Willow Springs Canyon. In a region where water management is critical for survival, the map records numerous historical improvements such as Painted Rock Tank, Latta Tanks, and Wiley Tadpole Spring Tank. The southern portion of the quadrangle shows the headwaters of the Rio Salado as it emerges from Painted Rock Canyon. This 2017 survey reveals a landscape of ranching utility and remote terrain, where isolated landmarks like Wiley Lake and the family-named Miguel Chavez Canyon serve as primary points of orientation.
