Big Summit Prairie dominates the upper reaches of this Crook County landscape, where the North Fork Crooked River begins its winding descent through the high country. As mapped during the early 1990s, the area serves as a vital water management and grazing zone within the Och Oco National Forest. The landscape is a network of open grasslands and meadows, including Williams Prairie, Antler Prairie, and Hickey Meadow, punctuated by numerous small-scale water improvements such as Hickey Reservoir and South Fox Reservoir.
