Woodsfield serves as the seat of Monroe County, situated on the high ground between the drainage of Sunfish Creek and Standingstone Run. The village is a center of regional memory, containing the Oaklawn Cem, Pioneer Cem, and Saint Sylvester Roman Catholic Cem. Moving north, the landscape transitions into the hills of the Wayne National Forest and the smaller settlements of Beallsville, Jerusalem, and Ozark. The area's religious and civic heritage is marked by numerous country burial grounds, such as Mt Zion Methodist Cem and the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Cem. The terrain is characterized by prominent high points like Pfalzgraf Ridge and water features including Switzerland Lake and the Upper Woodsfield Reservoir, reflecting a landscape defined by its ridge-and-hollow topography.
