The Connecticut River serves as the focal point of this regional study, carving the boundary between Vermont and New Hampshire where the Ammonoosuc River and Wells River converge. The twin villages of Woodsville and Wells River form a busy civic hub, connected by bridges and characterized by a dense concentration of local infrastructure including the Cottage Hospital and several well-established burial grounds like Pine Grove Cem and Muir Mem Cem.

Upland from the river valley, the terrain shifts into the agricultural and wooded landscape of Ryegate and Newbury. Traces of older transport networks are visible in the Old Railroad Grade and the Canadian Pacific line, while the modern era is represented by a large Interchange and a Drive-in Theater. Small rural clusters such as Boltonville and Ryegate Corner preserve the 19th-century settlement pattern of these border towns.
