Yainax Butte rises over a landscape defined by seasonal water management and timber resources in this portion of south-central Oregon. The terrain transitions from the high peaks of the Fremont National Forest and Winema National Forest down into broad, flat openings such as Coyote Flat and Bechdoldt Flat. The importance of water in this high-desert environment is evident through a sophisticated network of named catchments, including Bechdoldt Reservoir, May Reservoir, and Keno Reservoir, which serve the grazing and forestry operations of the region.
