The Tongass National Forest meets the rugged shoreline of the Gulf of Alaska in this coastal Alaskan landscape. The terrain is defined by a network of shifting waterways and glacial outflow, including the Ustay River and the braided path of Muddy Creek. A narrow landform known as the Akwe Spit separates the inland wetlands from the open sea, creating a complex environment of estuaries and tidelands near the border of the Glacier Bay National Preserve.
