About this map

Brabazon Range dominates this mid-century view of the Alaskan wilderness, where massive ice fields flow toward the coastal lowlands. The landscape is a complex network of moving ice, including the expansive Novatak Glacier, Chamberlain Glacier, and Rodman Glacier. These glaciers feed into a hydrology system defined by the Ustay River and Tanis River, which meander through the southern portion of the quadrangle within the Tongass National Forest. High peaks like Mt Reaburn and Azimuth Peak stand above the ice, providing fixed landmarks in a constantly shifting environment. In the lower elevations, significant water bodies such as Akwe Lake, Ustay Lake, and Tanis Lake mark the transition from glacial runoff to the forested drainage basins. This 1959 survey records the position of an Indefinite Boundary and various crevasse fields, capturing the state of these northern ice flows before late-century changes.
