The St. Joe National Forest encompasses this section of Idaho’s panhandle, where the high ridges of the Hoodoo Mountains give way to a complex network of drainage basins. Central to the topography is Abes Knob, a prominent peak surrounded by a lattice of forest service access roads and off-highway vehicle trails such as the Tanglefoot OHV and Emerald Creek Cutoff OHV. These routes reveal the mid-century development of the region's timber and recreational infrastructure within Latah County.
