The Deschutes River and Little Deschutes River converge in this high desert landscape, carving deep meanders through the volcanic terrain of central Oregon. In the early 1960s, the area reflects a transition from traditional livestock operations like Vandevert Ranch and Montgomery Ranch toward modern recreation and infrastructure. The burgeoning development of Sunriver appears at the northern edge, while the Burlington Northern railroad and a major Pipeline cut a straight path across the forest floor. Evidence of the region's geological past is prominent in the east, where the Lava Cast Forest and various Lava flows contrast with the riparian corridor. Local markers of the era include the Stearns Airfield and the small settlement of Stearns, along with isolated features like a lone Grave near the riverbank and several Cinder Pits.
