Appleton and the high plateaus of Klickitat County are characterized by a network of springs and timber roads just east of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest boundary. The landscape is defined by its water sources, including Baker Spring, Ellery Spring, and Bloye Spring, which supported the early development of this upland region. These features, along with the Beaver Pond and Rattlesnake Creek, illustrate the vital role of water management in an area dominated by forestry and ranching interests.
