The coastal plain landscape of eastern North Carolina is defined here by an intricate network of Carolina bays and expansive wetlands along the Sampson and Cumberland County line. This 2016 survey documents the agricultural and forested terrain surrounding the town of Stedman and the community of Autryville, where the land is punctuated by distinctive elliptical depressions such as White Pond Bay, Sewell Bay, and Smiths Mill Bay. These features, alongside The Pocosin and Vineyard Swamp, create a complex hydrologic pattern that has long influenced local settlement and land use.
