Stedman and Autryville anchor the high ground in this coastal plain landscape, separated by the winding course of the South River which defines the border between Sampson and Cumberland counties. The terrain is characterized by a dense network of Carolina bays and expansive wetlands, ranging from the large oval of Sewell Bay to the intricate reaches of Gallberry Swamp. These low-lying features create a unique drainage pattern where small streams like Sandy Cr and Beaver Dam Cr navigate between numerous pocosin and swamp depressions.
