Bacons Castle anchors the western edge of this coastal landscape, situated near the headwaters of Lower Chippokes Cr. This survey illustrates the rural character of the land where Surry County and Isle of Wight County meet along the expansive James River. The eastern shore is defined by a string of riverside communities including Rushmere, Baileys Beach, and Rushmere Shores, overlooking the deep waters of Burwell Bay.

Evidence of long-standing agricultural and family settlements is seen in the numerous burial sites such as Lower Surry Cem, Jones Cem, and Hickory Grove Memorial Cem. The interior terrain is a mixture of wooded wetlands known locally as porosins, such as Tuckers Pocosin and Belle Meadow Pocosin, which drain into a network of small runs and creeks like Lawnes Creek and Pagan River. Infrastructure like the Burnt Mill Bridge and several named roads such as Bacons Castle Trl connect these small hamlets to the Lawnes Neck peninsula.
