The James River dominates the eastern horizon of this Isle of Wight and Surry County landscape, where the tidal waters of Burwell Bay meet a coastline marked by Baileys Beach and Rushmere. Inland, the terrain is characterized by a network of creeks and unique wetlands known as pocosins, such as Tuckers Pocosin and Belle Meadow Pocosin. These acidic, peat-filled depressions provide a distinct backdrop to the small settlements and rural crossroads that define the area's history.
