In the mid-1980s, the area retained a character shaped by its ranching history and mineral extraction, with isolated outposts like Sadler Ranch, Bailey Ranch, and Romano Ranch established along the valley floor. The geography here is defined by extreme transitions, from the steep slopes of Bailey Pass to the level expanse of the Alkali Flat.
