The Coteau des Prairies plateau defines this corner of Southwest Minnesota, where glacial activity has left a landscape densely pocketed with wetlands and lakes. The settlement of Balaton is situated between the shores of Lake Yankton and Spink Lake, while the smaller community of Garvin lies to the east along the county line. The drainage pattern is particularly notable here, with the Des Moines River rising in the southern half of the quadrangle, just east of Lake Maria and the large expanse of Lake Sarah.
