Banks occupies a prominent position in this western North Dakota landscape, situated along the corridor of Nd-1806. The map illustrates a high prairie plateau that drops off toward the northern and western reaches of Lake Sakakawea, where the reservoir fills the ancient Missouri River valley. This 2014 survey documents the rugged drainage patterns of Tobacco Garden Cr and Clear Cr as they cut through the badlands-style terrain characteristic of this region. To the southeast, the protected lands of the Little Missouri National Grassland begin to dominate the topography. Local history is anchored by the Garden Valley Cem located east of the main settlement. The survey also marks the political boundary dividing Williams Co and McKenzie Co, following a northwest-southeast line that bisects the northern waters of the lake.
