The Kentucky Union Railroad cuts through the steep Appalachian foothills, following the course of the Red River as it winds toward its junction with the Kentucky River. This late nineteenth-century survey reveals an industrial landscape defined by iron production, notably marked by the Fitchburg Furnace and Estill Furnace in the western reaches of the quadrangle. These massive structures were centers of local activity before the region's economy shifted more toward timber and coal.
