The Kwethluk River meanders across this expansive riverine landscape in southwest Alaska, illustrating the intricate drainage patterns characteristic of the Bethel Census Area. The terrain is defined by a dense network of small lakes and seasonal wetlands that dominate the low-lying reaches of the river basin. Standing as a prominent topographical exception to the surrounding water-rich flats is Three Step Mtn, located in the southeastern portion of the survey. This elevation provides a critical landmark in an otherwise saturated environment. This 2017 study captures the shifting hydrological state of the region, where the interplay between the river's course and the myriad ponds reflects the dynamic nature of the Alaskan interior's subarctic ecology.
