Lake Independence sits at the heart of this coastal Marquette County landscape, separated from the vast waters of Lake Superior by a narrow strip of land containing the settlement of Big Bay. The village serves as a hub for the surrounding timberlands, with the Big Bay Cem located just west of the main town site. Dramatic coastal features like Black Rock Cape and Big Bay Point define the northern shoreline, while the inland terrain is marked by a complex network of forest roads and trails, including the Alder Creek Truck Trl and Yamaha Trl.
