About this map

Grande Ronde River winding through the deep canyons of Asotin County defines the landscape of this corner of Washington. The dramatic topography is punctuated by The Narrows and the massive Joseph Canyon to the south, where Joseph Creek and Cottonwood Creek converge. On the higher elevations, Weissenfels Ridge and Black Butte overlook a series of steep drainages including Couse Creek and Eugene Gulch. Evidence of early settlement and land use is visible in the network of mountain routes such as Montgomery Ridge Rd and the Craige Cem located near Montgomery Gulch. The map records a complex system of grades like Harben Grade Rd and Shumaker Grade Rd, which provided essential access between the high timbered ridges and the river valleys.
