Black Hawk and its industrial surroundings are defined by a landscape of deep gulches and steep mountain ridges in the early 1970s. The northern portion of the city is captured alongside evidence of the region's hard-rock mining legacy, including the Hunky Dory Mine, Baltimore Mine, and the Lost Dollar Mine. The terrain is carved by North Clear Creek and Russell Gulch, where extensive Clear Creek Tailings and Dredge Tailings remain as physical markers of large-scale mineral extraction. To the north and east, the character of the land shifts toward recreation and conservation within Golden Gate State Park and the Arapaho National Forest. This survey documents the network of mountain roads like the Golden Gate Canyon Road and smaller settlements such as Dory Lake as they existed before modern development altered the rural and industrial interface of Gilpin County.
