Pyramid Lake dominates the southeast corner of this landscape, its waters contained by the spillway and power infrastructure of the William E Warne Power Plant. The map documents a rugged transition between the Los Padres National Forest and Angeles National Forest, where the modern infrastructure of Interstate 5 and the Governor Edmund G Brown California Aqueduct cuts through the steep terrain.

Traces of earlier land use are visible in the numerous ranch and homestead sites, such as the Kinsey Ranch (Site), Lane Ranch (Site), and Bailey Homestead (Site), which point to a period of settlement before the expansion of the State Vehicular Recreation Area. Geologic and recreational landmarks like Piru Gorge, Hungry Valley, and the White Mountain range define the topography, alongside numerous developed campsites including Hardluck Campground and the Yellow Bar Picnic Area along the lake's shoreline.
