The Mississippi River defines the western edge of this landscape, its braided channels and islands creating a complex riparian environment near the Illinois-Iowa border. Landforms like Santa Fe Island and Railroad Island sit amongst a network of backwaters including Horseshoe Lake and Lundy Lake. These waterways have long supported small riverfront clusters such as Arnold at Arnold Landing, as well as the settlements of Marcus and Lainsville.

Upland from the river, the terrain rises toward Heer Hill and Mosquito Hill, where the rural character is anchored by several family and community burial grounds, including Morrison Cem, Massbach Cem, and Albright Cem. The southeastern corner transitions into the protected wooded bluffs of Mississippi Palisades St Park, while the interior is drained by Rush Cr and Camp Cr. Notable specialized sites include the NYA Camp and the residential area of Woodland Valley Courts.
