The terrain is defined by the sharp transition between the dense timber of Routt National Forest and the open meadows of the North Park basin. Water management is central to the area's ranching history, evidenced by an extensive network of irrigation works such as Shafer Ditch, Zirkel Ditch, and First Run Ditch which divert mountain runoff toward the valley floor.

Evidence of early 20th-century settlement is found in the clustered homesteads along the foothills, including the Brown, Monahan, and Fliniau sites. While ranching dominates, the presence of an abandoned coal mine near the base of Sheep Mountain points to smaller-scale resource extraction. The drainage systems of Goose Creek and Shafer Creek feed into the North Fork North Platte River, which meanders through the eastern plains past Shafer Ranch.
