Wind Cave National Park occupies the northwestern corner of this South Dakota landscape, where the high terrain of Boland Ridge overlooks a complex network of drainages and canyons. The geography is defined by significant elevation changes, notably at Unkpapa Peak and the pass at Buffalo Gap. Watercourses such as Blacktail Creek, Beaver Creek, and Lame Johnny Creek carve through the limestone and sandstone, creating the dramatic relief seen in Fuson Canyon and Calico Canyon. A primary transportation corridor follows the path of Old Hwy 79, tracing the easier grades between the ridges. This 2017 survey reflects the modern boundaries of the national park and the surrounding public and private lands in Custer County, showing how the local road system, including Co Hwy 16 and Co Hwy 101, navigates the difficult Black Hills topography.
