Bonne Terre and Flat River anchor this 1950s survey of the Old Lead Belt, where the industry’s massive footprint is visible through numerous Mine Dumps and extensive tailings ponds. The landscape is defined by the winding course of the Big River and the high peaks of the St. Francois Mountains, including Hughes Mountain and Simms Mountain. The transport network is dominated by the Missouri Pacific and Illinois Missouri railroads, which linked the mining centers of Desloge, Rivermines, and Elvins.
