Lake Moultrie defines the western edge of this Berkeley County landscape, where recreational communities like Bonneau Beach and White Point Beach meet the water. The inland geography is dominated by the dense woodlands of the Francis Marion National Forest, which is crisscrossed by drainage systems such as Fox Swamp, Gravel Hill Swamp, and Spring Grove Swamp. The area's settlement history is preserved in its numerous cemeteries, including Mudlake Cem and Black Oak Cem, many of which sit near the small crossroads of Bonneau and Macbeth.
