The Chetco River carves a deep path through the coastal wilderness of Curry County in this 1980s provisional survey. This landscape is defined by its series of upland openings and meadows, such as Looking-glass Prairie, Yank Prairie, and Horse Prairie, which punctuate the dense timber of the Siskiyou National Forest. These named prairies often served as essential landmarks for early navigation and land use in the high country between the river and the coast.
