Elkhorn Mountains and Elkhorn Ridge dominate this high-altitude landscape within the Whitman National Forest, where the former mining camps of Bourne and Sumpter remain connected by the narrow corridors of Cracker Creek Rd and McCully Fork. The terrain is characterized by a dense network of gulches and ridges, such as Chloride Ridge and Spaulding Ridge, which fall away from summits like Wind Creek Peak. Water is a defining feature of the drainage patterns here, from the headwaters of the N Fork John Day River to the alpine Killamacue Lake and Summit Lake. Near the southern boundary, the Sumpter Reservoir sits just above the settlement of Sumpter, while numerous forest roads like Granite Hill Hwy and Cable Cove Rd provide access to the steep interior canyons and hollows.
