The community of Box Elder serves as the primary hub in this portion of the northern Montana plains, situated along the county line between Hill and Chouteau. The landscape is defined by a series of drainages and reservoirs, including Big Sandy Creek and Boxelder Cr, which cut through the coulee-marked terrain. The agricultural character of the region is evident in the water management features such as Schmidt Reservoir and Grass Reservoir, as well as the naming of local features like Barneys Coulee and Jerome Coulee. To the south, Lonesome Lake and its associated Lonesome Lake Coulee dominate the lowland geography. The road network, including Kremlin High Grade Rd and Broadway, connects these isolated water sources and ranching areas to the town center, reflecting the persistent rural infrastructure of the High Line region.
